If the drive gear pulley is not terribly worn, then replacing the 2 drive pulley bushings and the wheel bushings may take the slack out of the belt.
If new bushings don't correct the slack in the belts, then replace the drive gear pulley, but only if the pulley is worn.
If you have a well used machine take a look at the wheel axles as well. If they are worn concave then they must be replaced.

This article is priceless. I have the same problem. Question is do I have to replace the entire pulley or can something be inserted in the bushing to make up for the space? Much appreciated

This is exactly what was wrong with mine! by: Andy
Hi, I wrote an E-mail describing my issue--it seems the drive gear was floating in the bushing. My machine hasn't been able to climb in a year, and this is probably the culprit.
Curt not only answered my question promptly, but he pointed me to this page. This page describes exactly what is happening with my Aquabot, and the parts are now on order! Here's to looking to a clean pool again.
