I had similar problem this morning - wouldn't reverse. And at times it was dead in the water.
When it was running I accidentally kicked the cord near the base and it stopped dead. So I fiddled with the power cord.
I found that the power cord was not fully screwed down to the controller base. Once I did that - all proper function resumed.

I had that problem and found that if you hold the unit at the pool's surface until air is expunged the unit will reverse properly.
Cheap fix!

FOR AN OLDER T4 (BROWN BODY, NOT THE NEWER BLUE BODY).
THE T4 POWER SUPPLY SUPPLIES POWER TO THE 2 MOTORS & HAS A REMOTE CONTROL CIRCUIT CARD (TO ENGAGE THE WHITE PLASTIC PISTON). THAT’S ABOUT ALL IT DOES.
I THINK IT IS THE DRIVE MOTOR, A DEFECTIVE CIRCUIT CARD INSIDE THE DRIVE MOTOR..
