dirty pool

my active 20 pool cleaner moved a few feet than stopped. I disassembled the impeller and cleaned it out. When i conducted a dry test with the vacume upside down it ran fine in one direction but made a clicking noise in the other direction. i pulled the motor out to see if there was any obstructions nothing. put the cleaner back in the pool went fine in one direction but could not reverse. HELP
